About Library Instruction

What is library instruction?

Classes are tailored to meet the needs of classes and specific assignments. Librarians can teach classes on a variety of information literacy topics and skills. These include:

  • Research Tools
  • Search Strategies
  • Research Topic Development
  • Differentiating Between and Choosing Types of Publications / Information (peer-reviewed, etc.)
  • Source Evaluation (lateral reading, fact checking, etc.)
  • Ethical Use of Information (citing and attribution, citation management - i.e. NoodleTools, annotated bibliographies, etc.)
  • Media Literacy and AI literacy

Where do we meet?

In-Person Instruction: Classes are hands on and activity based. At Gabert Library, classes are generally held in L319 - the library's instruction computer lab. At the North Hudson Campus, location will vary depending upon availability of computer lab space.

Online Instruction: Provide us with a link to your Webex or Zoom meeting and we can meet with your class virtually.

Instructor Participation

Instructors must be present for the instruction session and we encourage your involvement. Prior to the class, please plan to email or meet virtually with your assigned librarian so we can align our lesson with your class’s needs.

Ensuring a Successful Instruction Session

  • Please allow at least one week’s notice when scheduling the session
  • Work with librarians to establish learning outcomes for the session
  • Make sure that students understand the research assignment before the session
  • Actively participate during the session, ask questions, etc.
