Citation & Style Guides

Why Do We Cite?

What is Citation?

Citation is a way to give credit to the person or source where you found information, ideas, or words that you use in your work. Citing your sources of information gives credit to the people who created the information you are using. It shows that you are using information in an honest and respectful way. When you cite your sources, it makes your ideas stronger because you can back up your ideas with facts and information from experts. Citing sources also helps you to be clear about what ideas are yours so you don’t accidentally copy someone else’s work (which is called plagiarism).
