What is Diwali?

Diwali, or Deepavali, which translates to “rows of lighted lamps" from Sanskrit, is a holiday celebrated by the Indian diaspora. Diwali, a festival of lights, is a significant festival in Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism, with different ways to celebrate it. Houses, stores, public buildings, and temples are decorated with candles. Gifts are also exchanged. Diwali is an official holiday in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, and Pakistan.
