The date was May 14, 2022, a day that will go down in history as the day the devil, disguised as a racist asshole with hate in his heart and a semiautomatic rifle, came to the eastside of Buffalo and killed ten innocent Black people at Tops Friendly Market. Geraldine C. Talley, my sixty-two-year-old mother, was one of them. She was the last person he killed with two shots to the head before police 'calmly' arrested him. I guess I can find a little solace in the fact that they didn't take him to Burger King afterwards like they did when Dylann Roof, that other racist asshole, murdered nine Black people during Bible study and worship at their church.

The Cure for Hate paints a very human picture of a young man who craved attention, acceptance, and approval and the dark place he would go to get it. Tony McAleer found an outlet for his teenage rage in the street violence of the skinhead scene. He then grew deeply involved in the White Aryan Resistance. After fifteen years in the movement, it was the outpouring of love he felt at the birth of his children that inspired him to start questioning his hateful beliefs. Thus began the spiritual journey of transformation that enabled him to disengage from the highest levels of the white power movement.

An honest confrontation of systemic racism in faculty hiring--and what to do about it While colleges and universities have been lauded for increasing student diversity, these same institutions have failed to achieve any comparable diversity among their faculty. In 2017, of the nation's full-time, tenure-track and tenured faculty, only 3 percent each were Black men, Black women, Hispanic men, and Hispanic women. Only 6 percent were Asian/Pacific Islander men, 5 percent were Asian/Pacific Islander women, and 1 percent were American Indian/Alaska Native. Why are the numbers so abysmal? In Doing the Right Thing, Marybeth Gasman takes a hard, insightful look at the issues surrounding the recruitment and hiring of faculty of color. Relying on national data and interviews with provosts, deans, and department chairs from sixty major universities, Gasman documents the institutional forces stymieing faculty diversification, and she makes the case for how such deficiencies can and should be rectified.

Words on Fire is about the power of communication to do great harm, and how civic leaders andengaged citizens can hold leaders accountable to prevent such harm. Author Helio Fred Garcia focuses on the language President Trump uses that conditions an audience to accept, condone, and commit violence against a targeted group, rival, or critics. The book includes a history of such rhetoric, and identifies a playbook consisting of twelve forms of communication that typically precede genocides and other acts of mass violence. The Nazis used all twelve; the Rwandan Hutu used ten. Trump uses all twelve. The language triggers lone wolves to commit violence. Since 9/11 the use of rhetoric that provokes violence has been known as "stochastic terrorism," a phrase that tends to confuse and that makes discussion difficult. The author suggests a more accessible name: lone-wolf whistle violence, on the model of "dog whistle" politics. The book draws on the most recent scholarship on lone wolves, their mindset, and what it takes to activate them to commit violence. The book documents Trump's increasingly dangerous rhetoric through his campaign and first term, and how some lone wolves were motivated by the rhetoric to commit violence. It also describes the changes in the nation's political culture and media that led to Trump's nomination and presidency. It profiles leaders who dialed back their rhetoric when it was shown to put people's lives in danger.
