What is an Argumentative Essay?
An argumentative essay is an essay that uses evidence and facts to support a claim. Its purpose is to persuade your reader to agree with the argument you are making. In a good argumentative essay, you will use facts and evidence to support your argument, rather than just your thoughts and opinions. This requires you to investigate the topic, collect and evaluate evidence, and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. Argumentative essay assignments generally require you to do extensive research of literature or previously published material in order to back up your position. This guide is intended to help you find sources of information in support of your argument.
