Against the odds : the artists of the Harlem Renaissance
Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s was the scene of a passionate outburst of creativity by African-American

visual artists. Rich archival footage, including newsreels and photographs, recalls the influential force of the

exhibitions, the vibrancy of Harlem and the many significant personalities that shaped the movement, such

as William E. Harmon, W.E.B. DuBois and Alain Locke.
Bill Moyers presents a conversation with Alice Walker
In this program, Ms. Walker talks with Bill Moyers about a range of subjects, including The Color Purple,

whose themes are as relevant today as they were when she wrote the book in 1982; the way in which her

life experiences and ancestry are reflected in her writing; and her latest collection of poems.
Black death in Dixie
Portrays capital punishment as an instrument that disproportionately targets racial minorities and the poor.

Highlights statistics on the racial makeup of America's death row population, mistaken identification, the

toll on those wrongfully convicted, and the effects of the Jim Crow era.
Buffalo soldiers
Fact-based story about the all-black U.S. Cavalry Troop H, which protected the Western territories in

post-Civil War times. The story focuses on the troops' attempts to capture an Apache warrior, Vittorio, who

slaughters the settlers in New Mexico. The film examines the racial tensions that existed between the black

soldiers and some of the white soldiers, and the truths about the Indian invaders.

Challenges one of America's most cherished assumptions, the belief that slavery in the U.S. ended with

Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, by telling the story of how, in the South, a new system of

involuntary servitude took its place.

Filmmaker Byron Hurt looks at the past and future of soul food, covering its roots in Western Africa, its

incarnation in the American South, and the role it plays in the health crisis in the African American community.
