How to Add a Header With Page Number for MLA/APA

On the top of the Word program, click the "Insert" tab.

Word toolbar with Insert tab circled

To the right, where it says Header & Footer, click on Page Number. This will be important for having subsequent numbers appear in order as you write your paper.

Choose "Top of Page" and choose "Plain Number 1".

Word toolbar with Page Number drop down menu selected. Top of Page is selected. Plain Number 1 is selected.

You will start at the top left of your page above your name with the number 1. Type in your paper's running head behind the number 1. It could be a shortened version of the title of your paper.

Top left of Word page. Header above name is TITLE OF PAPER 1

With the "Tab" key on your keyboard, tab the number 1 all the way to the right side of the page.

Top of Word page. TITLE OF PAPER is on the left of the header. 1 is on the right of header.

Type in your last name behind the number 1. Be sure to put a space between your last name and the number.

Top of Word page. TITLE OF PAPER is on the left side. Ipsum 1 is on the right side.

Close out of the Header & Footer to get back to the main body of the page.

Your header and page number will have a faded color from the rest of your paper. This is normal.

Top of Word page. On the header TITLE OF PAPER is on left side. Ipsum 1 is on right side. Beneath header is Lorem Ipsum. Beneath that is ENG 101. Beneath that is Prof. John Doe. Beneath that is Dec.31, 2025.

As you're writing your paper, the page number will count up as the pages increase. Your running head and last name remains static.

How to Add a Hanging Indent in MLA/APA citation page

The hanging indent is required for the Works Cited/References page in your paper for the MLA and APA formats. Every subsequent line of a cited entry must be tabbed once to the right of the page. Here is an example:

For help and examples of MLA and APA citation formats, please see our Citations Guide.

Here are quick links for the MLA and APA Works Cited and References formats.

1. Make sure you have a new page open at the end of your paper. You can go to Insert > Blank Page.

Word toolbar with Blank Page circled.

2. Make sure "Works Cited" (MLA) or "References" (APA) is centered on the page. Here we have an example from an MLA formatted paper.

Top of Word page. Header has TITLE OF PAPER on left side and Ipsum 1 on right side. On center is Works Cited.

3. Type the citation as is. Here is an example citing an article from EBSCO Host, one of our online databases.

Works Cited citation in MLA format citing from online database. No hanging indent.

4. To do the hanging indent, place the cursor in front of the second line of the entry and press CTRL + TAB (Windows and Mac) on your keyboard. The line will indent to the right. If you only press TAB, the entire entry will indent to the right.

5. Do this for all the following lines of the entry. The entry's hanging indent will look like this.

6. When you have multiple entries, make sure they are alphabetized by the author's last name.
